Cedros Island- Disaster Averted

Disaster Averted!

After an incredible trip down to Cedros Island off of the Pacific Coast of Mexico, I was looking back at the footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 5 and found a pretty funny clip.  Disaster was certainly averted this time.

The Trip

I was down at Cedros Island fishing with Cedros Kayak Fishing and Jeff Mariani and the fishing was pretty incredible for Calico Bass.  The yellowtail bite was a little slow, but the bass were non stop and we put the Hobie Mirage Kayaks to work this week.

The Fishing

After a day of throwing big baits for yellowtail and swimbaits for calico bass, Jeff and I decided to do some potholing for big Calico’s in the thick kelp.  I would almost venture out and say that we got bit on just about every drop between the kelp leaves.  You didn’t even need an opening as all you had to do was drop you bait down in the thick stuff and it was fish on.  All we had to do was pull up the drive on the Hobie Mirage and drift right into the thick stuff.

At one point, after dozens and dozens of calicos in the kelp, I slowly paddled over to a small opening and dipped my Sand Eel just below the surface and kind of looked over to see what Jeff was doing.  Almost as soon as I looked over, BOOM it happened.  My Sand Eel got slammed and I wasn’t expecting the bite and my rod and reel went flying out of my hand.  Luckily I have lightning fast reflexes, sort of ninja like, and was able to recover.  My Komodo 350 and SCT rod were just about headed into the drink.  Here is a quick clip of the strike in progress.  Disaster Averted!

Overall it was a fantastic trip.  I’ll write a full recap shortly.

Happy fishing!

I’ve had a couple of fun trips this year for sure. Headed up to Canada for some Walleye and Muskie fishing then up to the Columbia River for some Salmon. Hope you guys are doing good.
