Savage Gear Suicide Duck at Lake El Salto Mexico
Last year I had the opportunity to get down to Lake El Salto to shoot some Suicide Duck footage with Shea from Stoked On Fishing and FLW and Okuma Pro Todd Kline. This was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I have been down to the lake several times and it is one of my top bass fishing destinations. It is still pretty rugged, but an experience like no other. First of all, our trip started off great. Flights were on time, food was good, and the ride to the lake was uneventful.
Raul picked us up at the Mazatlan airport, and off we went. We were greeted at the lake with a round of Pina Coladas, which is always nice. With three full days of fishing ahead of us we tried to get right to it. The first evening was spent rigging up our gear and talking strategy for the next morning.
We stayed off the lake a bit at a placed called El Salto Lodge. It isn’t the most glamorous of spots, but for a fishing lodge, it worked out perfectly. The place was clean, and the food was excellent.
Morning came quickly, but not as quickly as we downed our hot breakfast and were on the van to the lake. We were excited! The morning started with us throwing the Savage Gear Suicide Duck at the bass. Top water can be phenomenal down there at certain times of the year and we went right for it. We tried several different points and cuts to start off. Then just as the sun was starting to peak over the distant mountains, the first blow up happened. It was pretty exciting, and got us fired up for more.
As we approached one sharp point, I tossed my duck far across the point and slowly worked it back. All of the sudden, a big ol’ osprey came out of nowhere and took a swipe at my little ducky. Luckily I had my head GoPro on and captured the footage.

We kept on working hard for a few more bites. The Suicide Duck has a double spinning feet action, that creates quite the bubble trail.
We had several fish absolutely blow the Suicide Duck out of the water. And I mean, it went flying. Also, with the addition of the stinger hook extender on the back of the duck, we increased our hook up ratio tenfold. It was an eye opener for sure. We wrapped up the first day of fishing with big ol’ smiles on our face. And we had a pretty incredible sunset to remember it by.
Day two was more of the same with fish after fish on the duck. Here is Todd Kline with a nice one that he landed on the Mallard colored Suicide Duck sold exclusively for Dicks Sporting Goods.
Here is some of the footage that we compiled of our duck fishing down at Lake El Salto.

The Savage Gear Suicide Duck comes in two sizes. A 4 1/4″ – 1oz bait and a 6″ – 2 3/4oz bait. It is also available in four colors. Wood Duck, Baby Black Bird, Ugly Duckling, and the popular Yellow Duck. They also have a modest price point of only $16.99 and $19.99 respectively and can be found at most of your favorite tackle stores around the country and online.
We definitely found that rigging the top hook increased hook ups dramatically. Surprisingly, we didn’t have many snags when pulling these things through weeks and over sticks either. We did notice that the feet will break if you bounce them off of a rock, so I always suggest, don’t bounce them off of a rock. That usually solves that problem.
The trip itself was fantastic. Fishing was pretty wide open. Topwater, Armor Tube Worms, and even Fat Vibes were on fire! We were pretty early in the season, but we were able to see fish everywhere along the shorelines. It wasn’t a real sight fishing situation yet, but we could see these fish attacking. Could have been something to do with the Electric Sunglasses that Todd brought down with him. I rocked the Tech One XLS the entire trip, and loved every second of them. Furthermore, these glasses are light weight, have great visibility, and sleek design. So if you are looking for a pair of new shades, be sure to take a look at them. You won’t regret it!
Consequently, of my better Largemouth Bass that fell for the Suicide Duck. I saw this big girl come up from the depths with my Electric Tech One’s.
Overall, I like these baits. If you are a topwater angler, and most of us do enjoy that giant explosion from below, the Savage Gear Suicide Duck is definitely something to check out. Be it Bass, Pike or Musky, these baits get bit!
