Monster Yellowfin! Will it Break the Record?
Monster Yellowfin landed aboard Excel Sportfishing out of San Diego as they fished down the Mexico coast this past week. In fact, the yellowfin weighed in at 448-pounds on the boat scale and has a chance at becoming the new World Record if it is certified on Saturday Nov 16 at the docks. Here is the press release that Okuma put out regarding the incredible catch as it happened to be caught on an Okuma Makaira 20 size reel. These reels are awesome and have been the demise of many a tuna, but this one tops them all. ONTARIO, Calif. – Aboard the long-range sportfishing vessel Excel, on a 10-Day…

Wide Open Bass in January? Epic Saltwater Bass Bite
We had a pretty incredible bass bite in Long Beach Harbor in Southern California right at the beginning of January. Pretty odd for this time of year, especially with 55 degree water. There is nothing like kayak fishing in the middle of winter. I was out with John Bretza from Okuma chasing Sand Bass, Spotted Bay Bass and Calico Bass. We also added a few Halibut into the mix as well. I was out on my Old Town Bigwater PDL 132 and John was on his Hobie Pro Angler. I threw A-Rigs, Spinner Baits and Underspins and got bit on just about everything. It was pretty incredible. Here is the…

Fishing for Yellowtail at San Clemente Island
I recently had the opportunity to head over to San Clemente Island for some Yellowtail, Bass and Bonito fishing with Shea Mcintee from the television show Stoked on Fishing. The trip started off smoothly with a quick run to visit Nacho in Long Beach to pick up some prime bait, then head over to the island on Shea’s Robalo. The trip over took about an hour and a half in lake-like conditions on the early fall morning. We arrived just as the sun was cresting the horizon and it was gorgeous. This trip, we were fishing live bait, which was mostly sardines, and I had just about all of the…

Filming On Lake Berryessa And Catching Big Strong Bass
We recently had the opportunity to get up to Lake Berryessa just outside of Sacramento California to do a little bass fishing and filming. There is a lot of time on the water, and sometimes you have to try to drop a line when you have the opportunity. Sneaking In A Couple Of Casts This trip we were out with Mark Lassagne and Will Doud-Martin of Bass Angler Magazine doing some lifestyle video work, product videos and how to’s. We fished Berryessa as well as the California Delta. As I mentioned, you need to sneak in casts and drops when you can. This particular day I happened to be standing…
