Fishing for Yellowtail at San Clemente Island
I recently had the opportunity to head over to San Clemente Island for some Yellowtail, Bass and Bonito fishing with Shea Mcintee from the television show Stoked on Fishing.
The trip started off smoothly with a quick run to visit Nacho in Long Beach to pick up some prime bait, then head over to the island on Shea’s Robalo. The trip over took about an hour and a half in lake-like conditions on the early fall morning. We arrived just as the sun was cresting the horizon and it was gorgeous.
This trip, we were fishing live bait, which was mostly sardines, and I had just about all of the artificial baits in my box tied on at one time or another. I spent the majority of my trip up on the bow throwing all of my artificial baits. At a couple of points, I was getting a fish cast after cast with no break. Those types of days fishing are few and far between.
The Baits
My go to baits for the trip were the new FishLab Tackle Flanker Speed Jig baits and the small but mighty, Winglet Stick bait, also by FishLab Tackle. These two baits combined for the majority of my fish, but the standard Iron didn’t do to bad either.
The FishLab Flanker Speed Jig is a phenomenal fishing bait. Basically, its cast and retrieve. Can’t be much simpler than that. These slim baits can be worked fast or slow. Really cool.
The other Bonito and Bass killer was the compact Winglet Stickbait. These little baits have some heft and can be cast a mile. Zinc bodied and well built, they can take a beating and really do get bit…a lot!
Fishing the Island
Fishing the island was great. Baitballs, birds, breaking fish and….Tuna? We had some crazy big bluefin tuna come up near us in our chum, but we couldn’t get one to go. That’s ok, we’ll get em’ next time.
Here is a short video from the day with fish after fish, and a look at the yellowtail I caught that day as well.
Conclusion
Overall this was a pretty epic trip with Shea. We managed some nice yellowtail, but the non-stop action on Bonito, Bass and Barracuda was classic and endless. Always good when you have to leave fish biting.
