How to Hook Live Bait | A Quick Tutorial to Catch More Fish

Live Bait

Here in Southern California we are lucky enough to have live bait readily available to us. We are one of the only places that you can pull up to a bait barge and shell out a few bucks for some freshly caught live bait. Cast nets are illegal here in California, so this pay option works out great. Sardine, Anchovy and Mackerel are the go-to baits here in SoCal, but this tutorial will work for several live baits all around the country.

Choosing a Live Bait Hook

When fishing with live bait there are several ways you can hook the baits. Further down I’ll go through my favorite and probably the most common methods to do this. One big thing to consider is what style hook you are using when fishing this style bait. In general, for your offshore applications you will most likely be using a Circle Hook or a J-Hook. Either one will work great, but there are some differences to be aware of. I don’t necessarily prefer one over the other and will generally have several boxes of each in my tackle box. Here is a great little article from Okuma’s Tune-Up Tuesday series on the different hook styles.

How To

The key to fishing live bait is presentation. How you hook that bait and present it to the fish you are targeting is key. In this quick tutorial, I give four methods to hooking and using live bait.

Conclusion

I really hope this will give you a little insight on fishing with your chosen bait. It is a deadly effective way to catch more fish, but having a little knowledge before you hit the water can really make your day.
