Okuma Voyager Express Travel Kit – First Look

As a person who travels for a living, I am always looking for the next great travel rod or kit.  This year, Okuma introduced the new Voyager Express Travel Kit to add to their extensive lineup of travel rods and kits.  This particular kit is a 5 piece travel kit that comes with rod and reel packed in a soft travel carry bag.

Okuma has a wide range of travel gear and have filled that niche nicely.  From the high end saltwater Nomad rods to the SST multi piece Salmon and Steelhead rods, Okuma has the traveler covered.  Heck, they even make long multi piece surf fishing rods for the long distance casting fisherman.

In this post, I’ll be looking at the newly introduced Voyager Travel Kit.

Voyager Express

The Voyager Express consists of a 5 piece rod, a spinning reel and a soft travel case.  This combo comes in at $49.99 retail, so you can’t expect the highest end product, but it sure is nice.

The Voyager Express Kit that I have is the 6’6″ Rod with the 30 size spinning reel.  Even at 6’6″ the compact case comes out at a full 18 1/2″ in length by about 7″ deep by 2″ wide at the reel.  This is a very nice and compact set that will fit nicely in your suitcase, overhead or even behind the seat of your car.

The Rod

The Voyager Express features a 5 piece composite rod blank.  The rod has nice deep ferule connections which I find to give it a true one piece feel.  When it comes to the butt section, the rod has a nice comfortable EVA foam grip with a camouflage pattern to it.  Nice clean look.   The reel seat has metal hood to keep your reel secure.

The Reel

The Voyager Express features the Okuma Aria spinning reel.  The Aria is a 1 ball bearing reel with a nice smooth feel and packed with features.  Okuma has built this reel with some of the features of the higher end series like the cyclonic flow rotor, Japanese oiled felt drag washer for a smooth drag and a corrosion resistant body and rotor.  It even has a machined aluminum, anodized spool giving it a high end look.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the Voyager Express Travel Kit.  This is a well put together combo that is very compact and can easily be packed for your travel.  Whether you are hiking into a remote location or just want to throw it behind the seat of your car for that spur of the moment fishing trip, this is definitely a combo to check out.
