Senko Top 5 Colors To Catch More Bass – Bait Selection Secrets

Versatile and Popular Bait

One of the most popular baits you’ll find in the bass world is the Senko. The Senko is a slim bodied bait that comes in multiple sizes. Now available in 3″, 4″ 5″ 6″ and 7″ models, there is a color and rigging style for just about every angler. And when I say there is a color, there are literally over a hundred different colors available on the Yamamoto website.

Gary Yamamoto and the Senko

Gary Yamamoto is a name that is synonymous with bass fishing. Its a name you see on just about every bass jersey at every event you attend around the country, and for good reason. Gary Yamamoto has created a bait that you will find in just about every tackle arsenal out there, the Senko.

According to Gary’s website, the Senko was introduced in 1995 on accident really. Gary was trying to create the perfect soft jerkbait to compete with a popular jerkbait that happened to be on the market. Not finding what he was looking for, he happened to have a Bic pen in his pocket, and when he took it out, realized that it was the exact shape of what he was envisioning. He called his plant manager, and the Senko was born.

Pulling that pen from his pocket and having a moment of clarity changed the fishing world for ever. Who would have thought?

Rigging the Senko

There are countless ways to fish a Senko bait, with none of them being incorrect. These baits are just that effective.

Some of the most popular ways to rig the Senko are Weightless, Wacky, Texas-Rigged, Carolina-Rigged, Shakey-Head or Flipping-Jig. And now a super popular rig is the Ned-Rig, which you only use a small portion of the bait on a specific jig head. It looks odd, but wow is it effective.

Everybody knows how to do it, but here is a video on rigging and fishing the Wacky Worm.

With all of these rigging options, the Senko can be fished in all water columns from up shallow along the bank, to deep water structure. And don’t be afraid to throw the Senko in moving river water as well.

Top 5 Senko Colors

And now for what you came for, the top 5 Senko Colors to help you catch more bass. Of course, these will vary from angler to angler, and even region to region, but if you start off with this selection of colors in your box, you are definitely on the way to a faster, bigger limit.

I am going to list these colors out numbered from 1 to 5, but there really isn’t a number 1 in my opinion.

Green Pumpkin Black Flake

Green Pumpkin is such a great all around color. The Green Pumpkin will come in a few different varieties. Red flake, a fading pattern and the Black Flake. I like the darker flake pattern.

Watermelon Red Green Flake

The Watermelon Red Green Flake has been one of the most popular, if not THE most popular pattern for a long time. Super effective in everything from murky to clear water.

June Bug

The June Bug has got a great color combination and definitely stands out amongst the other colors in your box. A great color for darker, deeper waters.

Black Blue Flake Senko

Black Blue Flake

A great color, and a color that doesn’t get the respect it deserves is the Black with Blue Flake Senko. This dark color is great for early mornings or other low light conditions such as sunset. I also fish it at night pretty often. Deep water applications are also great with this bait. I love this color pattern on the Texas and Carolina Rigs.

Chartreuse Tip Senkos

The last of my list consists of the Chartreuse Tip Senko. The Chartreuse Tip baits are just awesome. So many applications from Gin Clear to Muddy Murky water. As the name says, these have a bright Chartreuse Tip section right at the pointy end. Some people use a paint or ink dip to do this, but the precolored baits are perfect.
