Striped Bass Fishing from the Kayak at Silverwood Lake| Big Striped Bass
Kayak Fishing
First off, I simply love kayak fishing! It is something I have done for a really long time and continue to do so. Heck, I’m talking almost 30 years. Over the years I have spent a lot of time in both fresh and saltwater chasing a variety of fish. From big offshore yellowtail to inshore species like spotted bay bass then on to freshwater species like largemouth bass and my favorite, striped bass fishing.
Silverwood Lake
Silverwood Lake is an awesome lake about 60 miles east of Los Angeles and north east of Orange County. It is off of the cajon pass on the way up to the city of Crestline. It is a big, man made lake that has a variety of fish including Crappie, Bluegill, Catfish, Rainbow Trout, Largemouth Bass and as I mentioned, my favorite, Striped Bass.
Launching your kayak at Silverwood Lake is easy and convenient. Here is an article I did on just that, Launching your kayak at Silverwood.
The Striped Bass up there can get quite large. In fact, I have caught a couple close to 20lbs years back, and have a couple of double digit fish since. The lake record at Silverwood Lake is 55lbs 8oz. That thing is a monster. I am not sure they get that big up there anymore, but they still stock trout…which plumps them up for sure.
Striped Bass Fishing with the Fly
One of my favorite ways for fishing striped bass is a technique called FlyCoring. This is basically twitching a fly that is at depth, attached to fly line. The setup is simple. Leadcore line attached to your reel, with a mono or fluorocarbon leader, then your fly. The key is the fly!
Here is an article I did on my Top 3 Flies for Striper. The Clouser Minnow below is one of the top!
The lead core I like to use for my striper fishing is either 18lb or 27lb Sufix Lead Core. The stuff is stong and bright and very reasonably priced.
Striped Bass Fishing Action on the Kayak
Here is a little video I put together of one mornings fishing, about three hours, and the striped bass were chewing good. They were all down about 40 feed deep, or 8 colors of leadcore.
Conclusion
Silverwood is a great place. One of these days I’ll actually hook into a really nice striper and when I do, I’ll be back to tell you about it.
