Monster Yellowfin! Will it Break the Record?

    November 14, 2024 /

Monster Yellowfin landed aboard Excel Sportfishing out of San Diego as they fished down the Mexico coast this past week. In fact, the yellowfin weighed in at 448-pounds on the boat scale and has a chance at becoming the new World Record if it is certified on Saturday Nov 16 at the docks. Here is the press release that Okuma put out regarding the incredible catch as it happened to be caught on an Okuma Makaira 20 size reel. These reels are awesome and have been the demise of many a tuna, but this one tops them all. ONTARIO, Calif. – Aboard the long-range sportfishing vessel Excel, on a 10-Day…

Wide Open Bass in January? Epic Saltwater Bass Bite

    February 5, 2024 /

We had a pretty incredible bass bite in Long Beach Harbor in Southern California right at the beginning of January. Pretty odd for this time of year, especially with 55 degree water. There is nothing like kayak fishing in the middle of winter. I was out with John Bretza from Okuma chasing Sand Bass, Spotted Bay Bass and Calico Bass. We also added a few Halibut into the mix as well. I was out on my Old Town Bigwater PDL 132 and John was on his Hobie Pro Angler. I threw A-Rigs, Spinner Baits and Underspins and got bit on just about everything. It was pretty incredible. Here is the…

Monster Snook Fishing out of Naples Florida

    August 18, 2023 /

Had a chance to do a little fishing out of Naples Florida pre-ICAST for some snook and grouper with James Marko of Goliath Fishing as well as Mary Harper @motivator_fitness_fishing on Instagram and Capt Chris of Sea Reaper Fishing Charters. We went out looking for snook and permit. We made some bait and off we went. I of course pulled out the FishLab Flanker and Winglet baits which the snook can’t seem to resist. Gear used:FishLab Flanker Baits FishLab Winglet Baits Komodo SS Be sure to subscribe to Davey’s World.

    2-Piece Rods for Kayak Fishing

    November 16, 2022 /

In some kayak fishing circles, 2-piece rods have quite the stigmatism. These kayakers say that 2-piece rods are only for those who don't know how to fish, or for those who want to save deck space. They claim that 2-piece rods are less durable and don't fish as well as their one-piece counterparts. But I say, don't listen to the haters!

Lobster Season | How To Clean and Devein

    October 4, 2022 /

Now that Lobster Season is once again upon us, it is always good to be prepared. One way to prepare for catching your lobster is to have a plan for what you will do with those bugs once you catch them. And what do you want to do with them? Hopefully eat them is on the top of that list. But before you throw those tasty lobster into the pot, I always recommend cleaning and deveining your lobster. You don’t have to do this, but it is always a nice touch to get the…well, poop out of your food. If you aren’t familiar with the term “devein,” in the terms…
