Komodo SS by Okuma – An In Depth Look

    September 15, 2018 /

Okuma Komodo SS I get a lot of questions about the Komodo SS by Okuma.  For those that don’t know, these are their low profile family of reels built specifically for saltwater use.  These reels are tough! The SS stands for Stainless Steel.  With Stainless Steel gearing, pinion gear, drive and spool shafts as well as aluminum side plates and frame this reel was designed from the ground up for extreme saltwater use. These reels were built for the fight getting up to 30lbs of pure fish stopping power. The 350 size was the first to hit the market a couple of seasons ago putting out over 25 pounds of…

Fuoco Authentic Napoletana Pizzeria in Fullerton

    September 14, 2018 /

Truly Authentic Italian Pizza   Fuoco Pizzeria Napoletana brings you truly authentic Italian pizza directly from Naples Italy where pizza was created.   With a family filled with true Pizzaiolos, or pizza makers, you are bound to get a delicious meal. The Restaurant Fuoco Pizzeria is steeped in three generations of Pizzaiolos.  They are very proud of their Napoli heritage as evidenced by the numerous news clippings, jerseys and other fun items that line the entrance hallway from the parking lot. Once you pass through the hallway you get into a nice and open dining room.  There are spacious booths that line the brick walls and lots of tables in…

Cedros Kayak Fishing- A Journey Worth Taking

    September 7, 2018 /

Cedros Kayak Fishing Last year I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to fish a few of the Coastal Conservation Association of California kayak tournaments around Southern California.  I’ve been a kayak fisherman since the mid 90’s, but have been out of the tournament circuit for a few years. When these popped up, I was all in.  The top raffle prize happened to be an all expense paid trip with Cedros Kayak Fishing, and you know what…I won! Kayak fishing at Cedros Island has been a dream of mine for a long, long time.  And to hear that I won, I was ecstatic!  I’ve known the owner of Cedros…

Fresh Bluefin Tuna Jerky – Super Easy Recipe

    August 31, 2018 /

Making Fresh Tuna Jerky With the fishing so incredible and the giant Tuna just off the coast, you now need to decide what to do with your catch.  There are many ways to prepare fresh Tuna, but one of my favorites is making fresh tuna jerky.  Of course, you can use just about any fish for this, but tuna is one of my favorites. The Catch The first step in creating delicious, fresh jerky is catching the fish.  Clearly you can use just about any fish you would like, but my go to is fresh caught tuna.  I caught the below Bluefin Tuna recently and had plenty of fish to…

Long Range Fishing Close To Home- Giant Bluefin Tuna

    August 24, 2018 /

With all of the giant bluefin tuna in the reports around Southern California, its hard not to dream about pulling on big fish.  As of this writing, you have a legitimate chance at catching a big bluefin tuna on every trip.  And when I say big, I’m talking 150 to over 300 pounds. This week I had the opportunity to get out and fish the annual Okuma 3 Day Charter aboard Excel Sportfishing. Day of Departure – Day 1 As the annual Okuma 3 Day Charter got closer, anticipation builds as we all read the fishing reports.  Yellowtail, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna and of course, Giant Bluefin Tuna all filled the…

Magnum Squish Jig by Savage Gear- Tuna Killer

    August 18, 2018 /

Savage Gear Magnum Squish Jig- Tuna Killer! At this point we all know the tremendous fish catching potential of the Savage Gear Squish Jig.  They have been deadly on a variety of fish including tuna, yellowtail, bonito and even dropped down for big, gnarly ling cod.  The erratic fall of these jigs is amazing and drives fish absolutely crazy.  Now Savage Gear has introduced its bigger, badder brother. The Magnum Squish Jig! Having topped out at 180 grams, the standard Squish Jigs were phenomenal.  Now the new Magnum Squish Jigs come in at a whopping 250 and 280 grams.  This is what the anglers have been asking for.  They still…

    Cedros Island- Disaster Averted

    August 14, 2018 /

Disaster Averted! After an incredible trip down to Cedros Island off of the Pacific Coast of Mexico, I was looking back at the footage I captured with my GoPro Hero 5 and found a pretty funny clip.  Disaster was certainly averted this time. The Trip I was down at Cedros Island fishing with Cedros Kayak Fishing and Jeff Mariani and the fishing was pretty incredible for Calico Bass.  The yellowtail bite was a little slow, but the bass were non stop and we put the Hobie Mirage Kayaks to work this week. The Fishing After a day of throwing big baits for yellowtail and swimbaits for calico bass, Jeff and…

Barramundi Fishing with Osceola Outback Adventures Florida

    August 2, 2018 /

Barramundi Fishing with Osceola Outback Adventures I recently had a pretty incredible opportunity to check another fish species off of the bucket list.  After this years ICAST show in Orlando, we had the chance to get out and fish with Osceola Outback Adventures for Australian Barramundi.  We didn’t even have to travel all the way to Australia to do it.  In fact, we hopped in our rental and drove about 45 minutes to St. Cloud Florida which is just outside of Orlando.  This is the only place in the northern and western hemispheres that you can actually fish for Barramundi. For those of you that may not know, Barramundi are…

    What is Zzyzx?

    July 29, 2018 /

As you go through life you gather experiences and memories that hopefully will last a lifetime. Certain smells, sights, songs and friends that as soon as you encounter them, you fill with joy.  We all have them.  They can be something like a traumatic experience that maybe brought you closer to someone, or the smell of saltwater that brings you back to childhood memories of playing on the beach with family and friends.  One of these for me is driving up the 15 freeway just past the city of Barstow and coming up on the exit sign to the city of Zzyzx. Zzyzx?  What in the world is a Zzyzx? …

Hip and Trendy- Check out Salt & Ash Restaurant Placentia

    June 28, 2018 /

Looking for a hip new spot with very creative food in North Orange County?  If so, be sure to check out Salt & Ash in Placentia. Karie and I were browsing through Yelp looking for a new spot to try out, and happened upon Salt & Ash.  After driving by this place for some time now, and telling ourselves we need to try it, we finally did.  Though I think Karie and I had different views of the place, I think overall, it is certainly worth a try. The restaurant reminds me of something I might find up in Portland.  Hip, cool and trendy.  It appeared to be a well-appointed…
