What is a Baitfeeder?
A Baitfeeder, or Baitrunner reel from other manufacturers, is a type of spinning reel that features a secondary drag system that allows you to fish with the bail of your reel closed, and almost zero drag pressure.
Once the on/off baitfeeder switch is turned on, it nearly completely disengages the drag, allowing for you to fish live or dead bait with the bail closed. What this does is when a fish bites your bait, it can freely swim, not feeling any pressure from your reel, giving it a better opportunity to get hooked. And heck, who doesn’t want a better hook up ratio?
The cool part about a baitfeeder reel is, to get your reel engaged to the full drag capacity, all you have to do is turn the handle and you are full on fighting your fish. Pretty cool!
Baitfeeder Reels
Now baitfeeder or baitrunner reels have been around for quite some time. They used to be quite common, and still are in some places, in the saltwater fishing communities. They were originally designed to fish live bait. The near zero drag lets you fish a live bait and let it swim away freely without having your bail open, lessening the chance for a big tangle or knot.
Something that Okuma has done is bring the size of these reels down into the freshwater market sizes. In fact, they offer the smallest baitfeeder reel on the market, a tiny 500 size. This little 500 size reel is perfect for your light trout and panfish needs.
Imagine fishing for rainbow trout with your favorite dough bait and not having to have your bail open, or dialing back your drag. Simply kick on the switch and you are good to go. Those little rainbow trout can grab your dough bait and swim off happily. Well, at least until you set the hook 🙂
Of course, Baitfeeders aren’t just made small, in fact, Okuma makes some very large Baitfeeders as well, such as the Coronado CDX which goes all the way up to an 80 size which holds 690 yards of 12 lb test.

Something cool that Okuma did for 2022 was to introduce the Tactical Green Special Edition Ceymar Baitfeeder. These are such cool looking little reels and match up nicely to any of the black rods in your arsenal.
The new Tactical Green Ceymar reels actually come in the baitfeeder edition and the standard spinning reel. They are only offered in two sizes, a 500 and 1,000 size. Both of these compact reels are perfect for your light fishing needs. Panfish, walleye, trout and the like will all be no match for the little Ceymar baitfeeders.
Fishing the Ceymar Baitfeeder
I can tell you that I honestly love these reels. I have been using the smaller baitfeeders for some time for my rainbow trout applications. This past week, early February, I had the opportunity to head up to Green Lake Wisconsin for some ice fishing and was introduced to Dead Sticking. Ok, mind blown! These reels are absolutely perfect for the Dead Stick style of fishing.
What is dead stick fishing? Well, pretty much just that. You drop your bait down, set it up on an IFish Pro 2.0 Tip Up, click on the Baitfeeder, and let it sit. Simple!
I’ll tell you what, this technique just straight works. Of course, we were also using these reels for the deep drop for big Lake Trout as well. Oh yeah…they work well for that too.
Conclusion
If you haven’t tried a baitfeeder style reel yet and you are interested, you really should. Either for your saltwater live bait fishing, or for the dough bait style fishing I was talking about earlier. It is crazy good!
