Wide Open Bass in January? Epic Saltwater Bass Bite
We had a pretty incredible bass bite in Long Beach Harbor in Southern California right at the beginning of January. Pretty odd for this time of year, especially with 55 degree water. There is nothing like kayak fishing in the middle of winter. I was out with John Bretza from Okuma chasing Sand Bass, Spotted Bay Bass and Calico Bass. We also added a few Halibut into the mix as well. I was out on my Old Town Bigwater PDL 132 and John was on his Hobie Pro Angler. I threw A-Rigs, Spinner Baits and Underspins and got bit on just about everything. It was pretty incredible. Here is the…

Fishing for Yellowtail at San Clemente Island
I recently had the opportunity to head over to San Clemente Island for some Yellowtail, Bass and Bonito fishing with Shea Mcintee from the television show Stoked on Fishing. The trip started off smoothly with a quick run to visit Nacho in Long Beach to pick up some prime bait, then head over to the island on Shea’s Robalo. The trip over took about an hour and a half in lake-like conditions on the early fall morning. We arrived just as the sun was cresting the horizon and it was gorgeous. This trip, we were fishing live bait, which was mostly sardines, and I had just about all of the…

Cedros Kayak Fishing Last year I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to fish a few of the Coastal Conservation Association of California kayak tournaments around Southern California. I’ve been a kayak fisherman since the mid 90’s, but have been out of the tournament circuit for a few years. When these popped up, I was all in. The top raffle prize happened to be an all expense paid trip with Cedros Kayak Fishing, and you know what…I won! Kayak fishing at Cedros Island has been a dream of mine for a long, long time. And to hear that I won, I was ecstatic! I’ve known the owner of Cedros…

Battle Of The Bays Round 2- Event 1 Mission Bay Pre-Fishing
The Battle Of The Bays Round 2- Event 1, Mission Bay event takes place this Saturday. This is a bay bass event targeting barred sand, spotted sand, and calico bass. The event is put on by Coastal Conservation Association of California and well attended and supported by the fishing community. Last years event was a blast with over 50 anglers joining the tournament. Everyone fished from either a Kayak, Float Tube, or Stand Up Paddle Board. Conditions were tough last year as the wind really started to blow pretty early in the day. I was lucky enough to nab a nice Spotted Bay Bass that came in at 15.25 inches…
