Fishing for Yellowtail at San Clemente Island
I recently had the opportunity to head over to San Clemente Island for some Yellowtail, Bass and Bonito fishing with Shea Mcintee from the television show Stoked on Fishing. The trip started off smoothly with a quick run to visit Nacho in Long Beach to pick up some prime bait, then head over to the island on Shea’s Robalo. The trip over took about an hour and a half in lake-like conditions on the early fall morning. We arrived just as the sun was cresting the horizon and it was gorgeous. This trip, we were fishing live bait, which was mostly sardines, and I had just about all of the…

How To Catch Saltwater Bass with a Spinnerbait – Catch Bigger Fish!
Spinnerbaits. Not Just for Freshwater Spinnerbait fishing is an incredibly effective technique to catch freshwater largemouth and smallmouth bass, but it is also extremely effective for saltwater bass. Here in Southern California we have a great inshore and island bass fishery. These bass consist of Calico Bass, Sand Bass and Spotted Bay Bass. These hard fighting saltwater bass are a lot of fun and like to pull back. I really enjoy targeting all of them and most freshwater techniques are all you really need to do so. How To Access Cast Control on Okuma Komodo SS 200
Komodo SS 200 Access I get asked pretty often why the Komodo SS 200 reels do not have a velocity control system when they in fact do. All sizes feature an internal, centrifugal cast control system. Getting into might be a little tricky with no external dial or switches. It’s really pretty simple. Opening Your Komodo SS 200 Here is a quick video on how to access the cast control on your new 200 Size Komodo Reel. Once you are inside of your new Komodo SS, you can make all of the necessary adjustments to the centrifugal cast control system. It is a 6-Pin system in the newer reels. No…

Limit Style Yellowfin Tuna Fishing
Annual Okuma Fall Charter Aboard Tribute Sportfishing With the reports of limit style yellowfin tuna fishing coming in recently, we had our charter timed just right. The annual Okuma Fall Charter aboard Tribute Sportfishing out of Seaforth Landing has been a tradition over the past couple of years. The Plan Everyone had high hopes of limit style yellowfin tuna fishing as we headed down to Seaforth Landing in San Diego. The fish had been reasonably close to home and it had been pretty wide open. The fish we were chasing were not big like the recent bluefin that we have been catching, but more fun sized in the 10-30lb class.…

Komodo SS by Okuma – An In Depth Look
Okuma Komodo SS I get a lot of questions about the Komodo SS by Okuma. For those that don’t know, these are their low profile family of reels built specifically for saltwater use. These reels are tough! The SS stands for Stainless Steel. With Stainless Steel gearing, pinion gear, drive and spool shafts as well as aluminum side plates and frame this reel was designed from the ground up for extreme saltwater use. These reels were built for the fight getting up to 30lbs of pure fish stopping power. The 350 size was the first to hit the market a couple of seasons ago putting out over 25 pounds of…

Chasing a Dream
If you are a die hard fisherman like I am, you probably have a bucket list fish that you have dreamed of catching. For me it was a big striped bass. This past week I had the opportunity to chase after that dream fish out in Tennessee with the guys from Tennessee River Monsters. The monster striped bass has been an elusive fish for me for some time. Living in Southern California we hear of the occasional monster, but they are few and far between. With lakes like Silverwood, Pyramid, Perris, Castaic and Diamond Valley in our backyard, we have ample opportunity. You’ll hear of fish over 20 pounds over…
